These Courses are exclusive to BTMA Member company employees only.

Course Summary

Trainees have the opportunity upon completion of each course to progress onto the next course module. BTMA Certificates will be awarded after the successful completion of each course.

The current Course Providers are:

  • Citizen Machinery UK Ltd
  • Star Micronics GB Ltd

It is hoped that, subject to demand, other BTMA Associate/Technical [Machine Tool] Members will also be able offer courses.

All the providers of the CNC Setting Courses require at least 4 trainees per course.

COURSE 3 - Advanced CNC Setting

(Machine type specific)

Course Duration is 4 full days 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday – Thursday

Entry Requirements

  • BTMA test paper must have been completed to assess level of knowledge above course 2 and to help with course grouping.
  • BTMA Tooling training course must have been completed.

The Advanced Course content will include:

  • Safe Working practices
  • Power tooling - Y axis
  • Basic 4-7 axis programming
  • Complex & advanced techniques
  • Understanding macros
  • Waiting codes
  • 3-4 axis simultaneous machining

All the Advanced Courses will be designed to be very similar to the existing courses run for companies who buy a new machine and require training at this level

COURSE 2 - Intermediate CNC Setting

(Machine type specific)

Course Duration is 4 full days; 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday – Thursday at a cost of £600

Entry Requirements

  • BTMA test paper must have been completed to assess level of knowledge above course one and to help with course grouping
  • BTMA Tooling training course must have been completed.

Course Content

Training to be done on a middle of the range spec machine.

5-6 axis machine.

Standard Machine Operations

  • Front turning / Roughing – Finishing
  • Back turning
  • Radius turning
  • Advanced screw cutting options
  • Boring
  • Internal screw cutting
  • Internal grooving
  • Knurling / Cut / Pressure
  • Face grooving

Material Basics

  • Importance of bar quality (straightness, roundness)
  • Barfeed considerations (preparation, remnant, ejection)

Making a Program (Machine Dependent)

  • Turning, drilling, boring, tapping, grooving, screw-cutting & parting off
  • Intermediate rotary tool, cross drilling & milling

CNC Control Screen – Hands on Experience

  • Explanation of intermediate controls & screen functions
  • Procedures for proving out
  • On screen editing- soft key option
  • Precautions after editing
  • Good working practices to avoid collisions

Saving Proven Process

  • Procedure to save proven programme
  • Procedure to save tool geometries & offsets
  • Saving of other useful information (tool life, component datum’s, cycle time)
  • How to import or export programs
  • Learn to write a program from scratch
  • Tool counts – management
  • How to reduce cycle times

All the Intermediate Courses are designed to be very similar to the existing courses run for companies who buy a new machine and require training at this level.

COURSE 1 - Basic CNC Setting

(Generic and does not need to be machine specific)

Course Duration is 4 full days 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday – Thursday at a cost of £500
